Lebanese Maronite League Questions
the World Silence over Terrorizing Christians in Iraq
January 30, 06
The Lebanese Maronite League questions how the world, including
its nation's, institutions, and organizations, and both the Arab
and Islamic world in particular, are silent over the repeated
terror that immerse Iraq in an ocean of its Christians' blood.
The Maronite League issued a statement in which it stated
that it was horrified by the reprehensible and revolting crime
of bombing seven churches in Baghdad and Kirkuk on Sunday January
29, 2006, where many were killed and injured.
In a related case according to Elaph, an Arabic pager, Muslim
students in Mosul University on January 29 attacked dozens of
Christian students. This happened primarly because a Danish newspaper
had published an insulting caricature drawing of Muslim prophet
Mohammad. a few months ago. Muslim clerics in Mosul, under pressure
from Islamic militias, issued fatwa (religious edict) calling
their followers to "expel the local Christians whom they
call Crusaders and infidels from the streets, schools, and institutions
because they offended the person of the prophet in Denmark."
There is a suspicion that the Bombing of the Churches may also
be related to the incident in Denmark . Islamic extremist when
at war with the west often punish the local Christians as a mean
of retaliation by falsely claiming that western countries are
driven by relgious extremism as they are. Christians of Iraq
in no way are responsible for what a paper in Denmark or another
country will publish.
Defining the Christians of Iraq Crusaders meaning invaders
is untrue because they are the indigenous people of that country
and were Christians seven centuries before the invasion of the
Middle East by the Arabs who brought Islam to the region at the
7th century AD. At that time the majority of the Population in
Mesopotamia was Christian Assyrian.
Assyrian Church liturgies is in the same ancient Aramaic dialect
spoken by Jesus and his disciples - it is an Eastern Rite, and
the Christians have done absolutely nothing to contribute to
the violence in Iraq except to stay out of the way and attempt
to avoid being murdered by the Islamic extremists who are all
too happy to murder anyone that doesn't follow the Islamists'
jihadi view of the world (this is not to say that there haven't
been tensions between the Muslims and the Christians, because
there indeed has been some serious problems - but for the most
part they were instigated by Muslim extremists rather than the
mainstream Muslim community).
To their credit :
Sunnis And Shiites of Iraq Condemned the Church
Attacks
January 30, 06
Baghdad (AKI) -- Political and religious leaders from Iraq's
Shiite and Sunni communities have unanimously condemned Sunday's
car-bomb attacks on churches in the Kurdish city of Kirkuk in
northern Iraq and in the capital, Baghdad, which killed three
people and wounded nine. A car-bomb also exploded outside the
Vatican embassy on Sunday, although no casualties were reported.
The first condemnations of the bombings of a Catholic church
in Kirkuk and Catholic and Anglican churches in Baghdad came
from Iraq's most influential Shiite cleric, Grand Ayatollah Ali
al-Sistani. Others followed from the radical Shiite cleric, Moqtada
al-Sadr , the Badr Brigade and from former Iraqi prime minister,
Iyad Allawi (a secular Shiite).
Later on Monday, the Muslim Ulema Council also condemned the
bombings and warned that such acts jeopardised national security.
"If anyone thinks these attacks can form a response to the
recent Danish cartoons, they are very wrong. This is not the
way to deal with the newspaper that has offended the prophet
Mohammed," the Council said in a statement.
Denmark's Jyllands-Posten newspaper has caused outrage among
some Muslims in the Middle East by the publication of 12 caricatures
of the prophet Mohammed, depicting him as a stereotypical Islamic
terrorist. Saudi Arabia last week recalled its ambassador to
Denmark for consultations.
Sunday's blasts were apparently co-ordinated, and took place
within 20 minutes of each other, Iraqi police said. Three of
the bombs went of in Baghdad, while a further two were detonated
in Kirkuk. In Baghdad, St Joseph's Catholic church in the suburb
of Sinaa and an Anglican church in the eastern Nidhal area were
hit. In Kirkuk, a bomb exploded at the Catholic Church of the
Virgin Mary, as well as the Kirkuk Orthodox Church. They were
the first attacks against christian churches since December's
parliamentary elections.
Churches in Iraq have been the target of previous bombings.
In August 2004, a series of attack targeting churches in Mosul,
northern Iraq, and in Baghdad, killed at least 12 people and
injured dozens.
There are some 800,000 Christians in Iraq - about three percent
of Iraq's population of 26 million.
